eRA System-enforced Validations

NIH's eRA systems check grant applications against many (but not all) application guide and funding opportunity announcements (FOAs) instructions. These system checks are called validations. When an application fails to pass a validation, the eRA systems generate errors and/or warnings.

The following documents provide detailed (form by form and field by field) information regarding system-enforced validations. System-enforced validations are a subset of the business checks conducted against an application (see How We Check for Completeness).

Applicants should not rely on system-enforced validations alone to ensure a complete, compliant, and responsive application. Applicants must follow all instructions in their FOA and corresponding NIH SF424 R&R Application Guide including those that are not subject to system validations.
